Answers to a column of burning questions

Two weeks ago I asked, “Can we devote an entire column to local questions?” What I should have asked is can the Transcontinental Internet server handle all the email traffic as a result of the column? Weekly Journal readers were passionate and witty in response. Here is just a small sampling of your feedback.

Some of you reminded me of a few questions I missed such as: Why do the garbage collectors always throw your recycle bin back into the middle of the driveway? We do you never see a smiling jogger? And why does the slow lane on the 174 going west move faster than the passing lane?

In response to my inquiry about Steffi D, a few folks jokingly noted that she is watching Canadian Idol reruns. Seriously though, she is starring in a children’s show on TFO and studying theatre at George Brown College in Toronto. And speaking of famous folks from our ‘hood, others mentioned that singing star Keisha Chante is perhaps the most famous person from our community.

In response to asking when the St. Joseph/Montreal road bridge would be fixed, I was told it will be done right after the provincial Liberals fix the 174/417 split. And this will be the same year the Leafs win the Stanley Cup. After this occurs, Toronto city council will vote to bury the overhead wires on St. Joseph because Ottawa city council never will. In other words, hell will freeze over first.

As for the best route to take to a Senators game from Trim Road 35 minutes before face-off, I was advised to purchase a helicopter. Turning to the New Covenant church and the great slogans, apparently they come from, wait for it, divine inspiration. Go figure.

Chapel Hill has some competition for serenity… folks in Chatelaine Village and Blackburn Hamlet – both areas with beautiful treetop canopies – say their neighbourhoods smoke Chapel Hill… easily.

With respect to my coffee cravings and looking for a Tim Horton’s on the north side of the 174, I am to speak to the local franchises or start my own Starbuck’s in Convent Glen. Unfortunately, the reader who sent this suggestion forgot to send me the winning Super 7 numbers at the same time.

Outdoor enthusiasts were equally split on Petrie Island; some believe it a treasure, others say it’s just a stretch of sand. Meanwhile, Champlain Cleaners is, for most, the model that other small businesses should emulate.

Finally, when it comes to the correct spelling of Orléans – with or without the accent – well that is the subject of some debate that I will return to in the weeks ahead. And if you have an opinion on this question, you still have time to send it to orleansouttakes@transcontinental.ca.
